At JCCC Year 11 and 12 students who are on a general pathway, are required to take part in the Workplace Learning program. This program is an opportunity for students to gain real-life experience in a range of workplaces. VET stands for Vocational Education and Training. This is an external program that students can take part in instead of/in addition to Workplace Learning. There are specific requirements that courses need, to count towards a student’s WACE (Western Australian Certificate of Education).
VET is intended to teach a student knowledge and practical skills to assist the student in a future workplace. There are different ways that VET courses can be delivered. Students are able to access courses through traineeships, TAFE institutes and Private registered training providers.
For the student to receive credit of a VET course towards their WACE they will need to fully complete a Certificate II by the end of year 12, or partially or fully complete a Certificate III/IV by the end of year 12. Partial completion requires at least 220 nominal hours of study of the course.
If a student is interested in starting a VET course, please contact Amanda Pleiter to discuss options available.
For a full list of trusted training providers that deliver courses to students, please see below. Please note, this list is not a complete list, rather the list contains helpful training providers that students have used before.
A special focus as of late has been on helping students figure out their career options for when they finish Year 12. This has meant that students who are undecided, confused, needing clarity around certain things or who just want to talk through their choices, are able to book a meeting with Amanda Pleiter to discuss any of these matters. This has had a good response from students and so the number of meetings have increased this year already.
This opportunity is great for students to be able to ask questions that perhaps their parents or teachers don’t have the time to discuss with them, or to receive clarity about information that is not familiar to them.
During these meetings students can ask about university courses, how to apply for university, what certain acronyms on University and Tafe websites mean, what different levels of certificates mean, how to figure out what type of industry is best for them, what their working style is and so much more. In the recent months I have collated most of the information that is deemed to be most useful for students and compiled a document with links, websites, and career quizzes for students to look at and use. This document can be found below.
There is also now a Careers display which can be found near reception. This space is filled with flyers from Tafe and other providers, career guides, university guides, spare Workplace Learning documents, the latest job information, and many other things.
As the careers coordinator I am always happy to meet with students so if you feel it may be useful, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. Amanda.pleiter@frsa.asn.au
