Careers in Education

The Careers in Education Committee was set up in 2005 to help promote teaching as a career. The Board recognised the ongoing shortage of teachers and therefore appointed a committee to find ways of encouraging both recent Yr 12 graduates and mature-age students to consider entering into the teaching profession.

The Committee's main focus is:

  • Raising the profile of the teaching profession in our community
  • Raising the profile of the career itself as a possible career path and assisting student teachers in their studies via mentoring etc.
  • Promoting teaching as a career for mature age students

The committe therefore also aims to support those who are currently going through uni.

The committee consists of:
   Geert Spyker (JCCC Council member)
   Jacques Kortenoeven (FRSA Administration Manager)
   Jess Kroeze (FRSA Administrative Secretary)
Nico Louw (Rockingham John Calvin School Principal)
   Hillie Bron (JCCC Teacher)

Any of the committee members would be happy to speak to you anytime about careers in education. Or you can email - careers@frsa.asn.au with any questions

2010 Teaching in Tassie program

Morning Tea - Thursday, 20 May 2010

Last week Friday, the CIE hosted a morning tea to announce the winners of the 2010 Teaching in Tassie program.  CIE invited the applicants, JCCC teachers, a representative from the Board and JCCC Council to attend the event.

The Board Chairman, Steve Terpstra, gave a small speech on the importance of a career in teaching.  Following his speech the CIE Chairman, Jacques Kortenoeven, explained the anonymous judging process to those present.  All reference to names had been removed from the applications before being sent to the judges, therefore there could be no bias in the judging.

After reading out short extracts from the applications of the winners, the successful applicants were announced.  The winners of the 2010 Teaching in Tassie program are..... Shimone Spyker from Yr 10 and Stephanie Terpstra from Yr 11.  Congratulations to both Shimone and Stephanie!!!

The winners were presented with a certificate of achievement and the other applicants received a certificate of recognition for their applications.  Well done to all those who applied for the program!  See below a couple photos from the event....

Presentations on a career in teaching - Tuesday, 30 March 2010

On Monday morning CIE invited Denise vanDyk, a 4th year uni student, to give a presentation to the students regarding her studies in education.  Denise is studying teaching at Edith Cowan University.  She is doing a major in Home Economics and hopes to start teaching at a high school next year.  Click here to view her PowerPoint presentation.

Chloe Plug and Jordan Bonker also gave a presentation on their experiences in Tassie.  They both applied for the Teaching in Tassie 2009 program, through which they were sent to Launceston for a week of work experience in Launceston John Calvin School (LJCS).

CIE received a great response from Chloe Plug, Jordan Bonker and the staff at LJCS about the program.  Therefore the CIE plans to relaunch the program in 2010!  Three students will be sent to Tassie in June/July this year to experience 'what it could be like' as a teacher.  Click here to download an application form.  Applications close on Friday 23rd April.
